Adriaen Ysenbrandt
The Mass of St. Gregory the Great

Netherlands, Circa 1510-50
Oil on panel
The Getty Museum, Los Angeles, California

As was traditional by the time of this painting, Gregory's eucharistic miracle is portrayed as the appearance above the altar of a real-seeming Christ standing in a sarcophagus with the Cross and other instruments involved in his Passion. The old woman of the original story is now displaced by deacons, minor clergy, and a bishop.
